Latest NewsPlaytop NewsPlaytop Reaches New Heights A new playground has been installed on a school rooftop as part of a huge redevelopment project in Germany. The new rooftop play area has been installed by Playtop Spielplatz GmbH, using Playtop Safer Surfacing. It is part of the vast HafenCity project, a docklands regeneration scheme which is taking place in Hamburg, Germany. The scheme incorporates some 157 hectares that will be used for both commercial and residential uses to create a new and lively city centre space. As part of the redevelopment project a new quarter is being developed on the site of a former coffee warehouse, which will centre around Sandtorpark, a green open space. Within the quarter is the HafenCity Katharinenschule School and kindergarten, which opened to pupils this Autumn. The School will be an important social hub in HafenCity and the play area, designed by architects HUNCK+LORENZ FREIRAUMPLANUNG (www.hl-freiraum.de), has very effectively used the otherwise redundant roof space. The project included 675 m2 on the roof of the building (the fifth floor) as well as 150 m2 of Playtop on the first floor between the kindergarten and the school and another 160 m2 next to it on the ground floor. In total 985 m2 of base layer was installed and the top layer included graphics - which were up to four by five metres in size - in nine different colours and blends. Due to the complexity of the project all the raw materials had to be lifted onto the roof areas by crane. At the end of the project Playtop was also asked to install a short running track (60m long - 4 lanes), which will be used as part of the children's physical education lessons. As a result of the success of this project, Playtop Spielplatz is now working on future rooftop projects in Berlin and Frankfurt as well as further installations in Hamburg. |
